Stephanie McCleary ‘13 has wanted to be a teacher since she was young. She’s now living her dream as a kindergarten teacher at Briar Glen School in Community Consolidated District 89, where she recently received the District's “Empowers 89” Award. The award recognizes “those who do quiet, generous, and extraordinary work.”

In her award nomination, her co-workers shared that Stephanie always seems to be smiling and is always caring for others.

“She remembers the small things, such as her students’ activities, hobbies, and family outings,” one colleague wrote. “She also remembers things about staff and makes sure to let them know she is thinking of them.”

Stephanie said that while she’s always known teaching was her calling, it was kindergarten that became her best-fit.

“I’ve always loved helping the little ones,” she said. “I love how much they love to learn and they come in from all different backgrounds and very diverse skill sets. It’s fun to be a part of their first school experience and get them excited for school.”

After graduating from St. Francis High School, Stephanie received her bachelor's degree in Elementary Education at the University of Illinois and then her Master's in Teaching and Learning with an endorsement in ESL through the University of St. Francis in 2021. She’s also currently working on getting her principal endorsement through Lewis University.

While at SFHS, Stephanie said she loved how close-knit everything was and knowing everyone in her class and teachers so well.

“It was a phenomenal education and being able to learn while practicing in my faith was so great,” she said.
Stephanie is getting married in September, and four of her bridesmaids are fellow Spartans.

“It’s like a family,” she said. “I owe it to St. Francis for helping me get to where I am right now.”

Congratulations, Stephanie - we're #SpartanProud of you!
