John Timothy starts with shock and cries, "I certainly am not the thief! It must have been Charlie!"
Charlie Carlton backs up defensively, stating, "I certainly would not do such a thing."
The disappearance of the answer key to the final exam shook the teachers - now that they were gone, the effortfully crafted tests were no longer safe in their secrecy. With this leak in personal security, grades could not be administered without the suspicion of plagiarism.
The three students were the only suspects. Each had been found near the classroom from which the tests were stolen, though each deny having taken the fateful papers. It is up to you to find out who took the test.
John tells you, "I was doing homework across the hall and had no idea what was going on. When you came up to me talking of stolen answers, I was very confused. I was sitting over there and didn't see anything or move at all."
Charlie speaks up next, saying, "I spoke to the teacher in this room a bit after school today, but then I had to leave for practice. I don't know what you're talking about."
Phillip sighs and states, "I never went anywhere near the room that the tests were in. I had no idea they were there. I just went back to get my things when all of a sudden you came up and accused me of stealing test answers. I'm innocent, I swear!"
You take a moment to ponder over what you just heard. After some deliberation, you speak up. "Phillip," you say, "it would be wise to give back the answer key. I doubt this would look good on your academic record."
How do you know it was Phillip?
Answer: If Phillip never went anywhere near the room, he would not have gone back to get his things. This little slip gave him away.
