As soon as the fall season begins, so does the stream of new Halloween movies. With this stream of new movies this year comes the sequel of an original very popular Halloween movie, Hocus Pocus. On December 10th, Disney announced that they would be making a sequel to the 1993 movie. I was very excited to hear this because I loved the first movie. I was excited to see what would be different and the same in the sequel.
Things that were the same in the sequel were some of the cast. The Sanderson sisters who were the main antagonists in the original movie were also in the sequel. I was disappointed because they were the only original cast members who appeared in the sequel. Another thing that was similar was the setting, which is to be expected in a sequel. The movie takes place in Salem, Massachusetts. They used similar buildings but also put a newer, more modern twist on them. I am happy with the things that were the same, but I would've liked for there to be more "nostalgic" moments within the sequel.
There were many things that were different in the sequel. I will name just two of them to save time. The first was that the movie had more musical songs in it. I didn't really like this aspect of the new movie--I thought it made the movie feel different from the original and made it feel like a completely different story. Every time they would start singing it felt wrong and didn't really make sense. A second thing that was different in the movie was that there was more backstory given to the Sanderson sister trio. We got to see them as children and learn about their earlier lives. I liked this because it gave a new perspective on their characters and more explanation to why they acted the way they did. Some of the differences made the movie feel completely separate from the original. I believe that the differences in this sequel were bad and ruined the movie as a whole.
Overall, I'd say that I didn't enjoy the sequel. After watching it, I think it would've been better as just one movie. The sequel felt like an entirely different series and didn't feel the same.
